The following is a statement about artist Will Barnet from Rev. Tom Pike, Rector Emeritus of Calvary-St. George's Church, Trustee of Gramercy Park and Gramercy Park Block Association Board Member, sent to GPBA President Arlene Harrison:

"Gramercy Park is in mourning for its neighbor renowned artist Will Barnet who passed away on November 13th. People have placed flowers and candles near the entrance of The National Arts Club where he lived with his wife Elena.

Will and Elena were without power for a few days because of Superstorm Sandy, and had to move to a warmer apartment uptown. Will got "a touch of pneumonia" during the power outage, but had been feeling better in recent days.  The weather crisis has touched us in many ways, and we feel this is one of them.

Will was a familiar presence in the Park, known and loved by all who knew him. The children remember him as a kindly man who would frequently have conversations with them.  Mothers and caretakers remember his friendly manner.  He seemed so much a part of the neighborhood that everyone is in shock at his passing, even at the great age of 101. We thought we would always have him with us."
