Sewer Collapse on Gramercy Park South

February 13, 2013 10:00 AM

Many of you have inquired about the work going on at Gramercy Park South. I met with the ConEd team this morning and learned the following:

A section of a 4 foot by 4 foot sewer that runs 12 feet under 20th Street and Gramercy Park South collapsed. The collapsed section is in front of 24 and 26 GPS. The city will have to dig up the sewer and replace it, which is likely to take approximately 10 days.  In the meantime, they are installing a temporary pump and cutting off gas in the affected area, in case the collapse impacts the gas pipes.

For the time being, there will be no gas for cooking or to operate clothes dryers in the laundry rooms of the affected buildings, nor will there be until Con Ed restores gas service.

We do not know as yet when the gas will be restored, since the workmen did not know when we talked to them this morning.

Stay tuned for future updates.
