Emergency responders attempt to revive a pedestrian who was struck by an MTA bus at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and East 20th Street.

GRAMERCY - An elderly man was struck and killed by an MTA bus Wednesday morning while crossing the intersection of Third Avenue and East 20th Street, police said.

The unidentified 80-year-old man was crossing Third Avenue from east to west as the bus crossed East 20th Street heading south at roughly 10:30 a.m., police said. They added that the M102 bus apparently had the light.

Abdul Mohammed, an employee of the Orbit News Smoke Shop, was working when he heard a "big sound" on the street outside.

"I thought someone had jumped (from a building)," he said. "I didn't think someone had been hit."

Third Avenue was briefly closed to traffic during the investigation.

Arlene Harrison, president of the Gramercy Park Block Association and a trustee of Gramercy Park, received a call from a neighbor and went to check out the scene.

When she arrived, emergency personnel were performing CPR on the man.

"It looked horrible," she said. "There was blood everywhere."

The bus remained on scene after the crash.

The man was taken to Beth Israel Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
